What's CITY Talking About?
Victory for the Point State Park Tree
After the state announced it was retiring the holiday tree at Pittsburgh’s confluence in 2020, more than 10,000 residents signed a petition demanding that its 30-year tradition continue — and that finally happens tonight. Duquesne Light will unveil the new “Three Rivers Tree” with 22,000 LED pixel lights, water ballasts to protect the grounds of the park, and vibrant images symbolizing the season. A Look at 1950s Pittsburgh
From 1955 to 1957, high-profile photographer W. Eugene Smith captured Pittsburgh in 100 prints (out of 17,000 negatives) for “Pittsburgh: Story of an American City.” Now, you can see our city through his lens in Sam Stephenson’s new book, “Dream Street: W. Eugene Smith’s Pittsburgh Project.” Stephenson will share Smith’s story at a free, virtual event hosted by Riverstone Bookstore, 7-8 p.m. tonight. [Pittsburgh City Paper]
Pittsburgh Recognizes Road Traffic Victims
Bike Pittsburgh is recognizing World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday with a cycle in memory of Austin Fike, who was killed by a driver in Brookline in 2019. The ride starts at 10 a.m. near Austin’s ghost bike at Brookline Boulevard and Pioneer Avenue. Donuts and coffee will follow. [Bike Pittsburgh]
- 🚲 Mayor Gainey proposed a 136 percent increase in traffic calming measures in his “State of the City” address this week. We talk more about those efforts in today’s podcast. [🎧City Cast Pittsburgh]
Downtown Police Station Is Moving
The bureau is moving to a larger substation at 439 Wood Street early next year. The new office will provide more space for community meetings, bicycle storage, e-bike charging, and a public safety command post during Downtown events. [TribLIVE]
- 🚨 Larry Scirotto is Pittsburgh’s first out, gay police chief. We ask the hard question: Will that change policing in the city? [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
