What's CITY Talking About?
Downtown Traffic Changes
Starting today, Sixth Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Ross and Grant streets. It’s a part of construction for Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s $291 million Bus Rapid Transit system (or University Line) between Downtown and Oakland. Sidewalks will stay open. City Boosts Affordable Housing Investments
The city is preserving 170 units of affordable housing and investing in new projects across the city with $3.6 million in loans from the Urban Redevelopment’s Housing Preservation Program. The program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. Learn about each project. [PublicSource / 90.5 WESA]
Residents Protest Air Pollution
Thirty residents from the Mon Valley and East Palestine, Ohio rallied last week outside of a coal and steel industry conference co-sponsored by Norfolk Southern. Protesters, who gathered in Downtown, shared medical concerns linked to the train derailment and U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works — the largest source of particulate pollution in Allegheny County. [Allegheny Front]
- Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor will audit how the county spends its Clean Air Fund — a bucket of money that comes from the fines polluters pay. [90.5 WESA]
Blastoff! CCAC’s Cancer Study Goes to Space
Community College of Allegheny County students launched their research experiment into space last week in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Jason Gomes, a biotechnology student, and Daniel Roth, a respiratory therapy student, won the International Student Spaceflight Experiments competition in 2022. They are examining how exposure to microgravity impacts cancer cell growth or dormancy. [CCAC Release / KDKA-TV]

E-Scooters Strike Back! How & Why They Could Return
Spin e-scooters were all over Pittsburgh as part of a two-year pilot, and lawmakers could reauthorize them any day — if the Senate can finish the long-overdue state budget. (It’s only 4.5 months late, but who’s counting.) City Cast’s Megan Harris and Sophia Lo talk about this proposed new trial, how lawmakers are feeling, and what one reporter who’s doggedly dug into scooter-related injuries hopes to see from the city in phase two.
Have a great week,
