What's CITY Talking About?

3 Newly-Elected PPS Board Members

After an unopposed race, three new faces are joining the Pittsburgh Public Schools board as the school anticipates budget challenges and possible closures:

  • District 4: Yael Silk, executive director of Arts Education Collaborative, “wants to ensure more transparency and accountability about allocation of funds and resources.”
  • District 6: Emma Yourd, an education and workforce development manager, “wants to make changes at the policy level for student mental health and equitable distribution of resources.”
  • District 8: Dwayne Barker, a community organizer, “will work to bring all school buildings up to date and strengthen community engagement in the district.” [PublicSource]

New Art At Fern Hollow Bridge

Next time you cross above or below the span, stop to admire new art honoring the area’s geological history. John Peña’s “400 million years of water” traces the origin of Fern Hollow Creek with illustrations and descriptions of “historical water-related moments." Under the bridge, Carin Mincemoyer’s Trail Meander” is designed to look like driftwood and river rock, offering a space for trail goers to sit, reflect, or socialize. [TribLIVE]

A Mobile Classroom for Unhoused Students

Around 3,100 kids in Allegheny County experienced homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year, and a new program hopes to help K-8 students who missed long stretches of school with free, one-on-one tutoring. “Winnie’s Wagon” is the country’s first mobile classroom with books, tablets, games, a 3-D printer, and toys for hands-on learning. Students and families can also get mental health services and emergency funds. [90.5 WESA]

Bloomfield Housing Project Stalled

The proposal to add a grocery store at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Main Street, along with hundreds of housing units and a public plaza, hit a roadblock this week — the city denied a zoning variance for increased height and additional affordable housing. The developer, Echo Realty, can appeal the decision within 30 days. [NEXTpittsburgh]
