What's CITY Talking About?
AGH Nurses Get New Contract
Unionized nurses at Allegheny General Hospital avoided a strike with a “historic agreement” that will ease some stress from the staffing crisis. The 1,200 registered nurses and nurse practitioners organized under SEIU Healthcare will get an average 23% pay increase, and employees with a BA in nursing will start at $40 per hour by the end of the contract. The contract also improves nurse-to-patient ratios with 70 new per diem pool nurses, as well as workplace safety improvements with more weapon detection and panic alarms. Frick Reschedules Islamic Art Show
“Treasured Ornament: 10 Centuries of Islamic Art” was originally set to open Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Frick Pittsburgh, but the museum announced it has been rescheduled for August 2024. The Frick earlier said it would postpone the exhibition indefinitely because of concerns about potentially offending some community members amidst the Israel-Hamas war. The move drew criticism from advocacy groups like the Pittsburgh chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which deemed it unnecessary and said conflating Islamic tradition and art with terrorism is “just disheartening.” [WESA]
Effort To Pay Incarcerated Workers Fails
Jail Oversight Board member Bethany Hallam proposed a motion to compensate incarcerated people $10 a day for labor performed in the jail, but most members abstained from voting, saying it wasn’t clear how the mandate would be funded. Hallam plans to reintroduce the motion. [TribLIVE]
Unseen Warhol Works On Display
There are nearly 10,000 works by native Pittsburgh pop artist Andy Warhol that have never been seen by the public, and now you can get a glimpse of more than 60 of those pieces at “Unseen: Permanent Collection Works” through March 4. “Some represent riffs on or experiments with well-known Warhol images. Others are previously unshown examples of larger series depicting images that were of importance to Warhol,” according to the museum. [The Warhol]
