💀 The mystifying story of Pittsburgh’s moving morgue
October 30, 2023
Welcome to a new week, neighbor! Halloween draws out our fascination with morbidity, and I have one truly peculiar Pittsburgh story for you below 💀

What's CITY Talking About?
McKees Rocks Newspaper Folds
After 120 years of continuing community coverage, McKees Rocks will no longer have a publication. Gazette 2.0, which came on the scene when the Suburban Gazette closed in 2017, published its final edition Thursday. Owner and publisher Sonja Reis says the decision to fold was due to a loss of ad revenue — she regularly had to dip into her own paycheck to meet payroll. [90.5 WESA]
- 🪦 Celebrate the life and death of local news from 6 to 8 p.m. this Thursday at 701 Yunker St., McKees Rocks.
Synagogue Shooting Led to Little Action
On the fifth anniversary of the antisemitic synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Congress introduced resolutions to remember the lives of the 11 victims. Lawmakers have also created a grant to boost security at nonprofit organizations that serve marginalized communities, but SpotlightPA reports that few other substantial state policy changes have passed. Pittsburgh Tech Helps Dyslexic Students
A new tech learning system developed with CMU provides supplemental support to students with dyslexia, a disability that affects 20% of the population. Luca.AI, a combination of ChatGPT and internally developed AI, allows students to read along and offers hints when needed. Once completed, the learning system creates customized lessons based on the student’s problem areas. [NEXTpittsburgh]

Pgh Wants a Lunar Lander for Christmas
Astrobotic, the North Side-based space company, plans to launch its Peregrine lunar lander on Dec. 24 from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Sixteen years in the making, the project will be Astrobtic’s first launch. [TribLIVE]
- “Pittsburgh used to be built as a steel town, and now we are a tech one. Steel helped to build things, and we are still building things that are building the country, just in a different way,” Astrobotic CEO John Thorton told TribLIVE.
