🛍️ The welcome mat every Pittsburgher needs
October 23, 2023
Good morning, neighbor! Construction of PIT’s new terminal is underway, but I have to be honest: I’m way more excited about the mini Allegheny County Airport that just landed in the Carnegie Science Center’s Miniature Railroad & Village ✈️

What's CITY Talking About?
Family Sues ACJ, AHN in Wrongful Death
The family of a man who died on Sept. 21 in connection with the Allegheny County Jail filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the jail, county, and Allegheny Health Network were negligent to his medical needs, leading to a wrongful death. Anthony Talotta, 57, had autism and intellectual disabilities and the family alleges that the jail’s intake staff knew that his disabilities would make his life in jail “nearly impossible.” [90.5 WESA]

Arts Center, Apartments for the Hill
Pittsburgh’s oldest Black church, Bethel AME, was razed during Hill District development in the 1950s to make room for the Civic Arena. Earlier this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to give 1.5 acres of that land back to the church, and now the congregation plans to turn it into affordable apartments. [PublicSource]
- The Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Co. will also soon be joining the neighborhood in the new Madison Arts Center. [90.5 WESA]
Historic Landmark Awarded to Engineer’s House
A Prairie- and Neoclassical-style Point Breeze house that belonged to Westinghouse Electric Co.’s engineer Emil Keller will become a historic landmark. The 1905 house had electrical lights when most homes still had gas fixtures. Fittingly, the home’s current owner is also an electrical engineer. [NEXTpittsburgh]
- What’s next? The former B’nai Israel Synagogue in Garfield, known for its “glittering mosaics,” has been nominated for historic designation. [TribLIVE]
Discover the Titanic in Pittsburgh
If you’ve ever wondered what the voyage was like for the 2,240 passengers and crew on the Titanic in 1912, you can get your own replica boarding pass and see for yourself at the Carnegie Science Center’s latest immersive exhibit: TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition. The exhibit has more than 150 pieces recovered from the shipwreck, as well as video footage, cabin replicas, and more from the tragedy at sea. [Pittsburgh Magazine]
