What's CITY Talking About?
President Biden to Announce Hydrogen Hub Plans
The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub is set to get federal funding, and President Joe Biden will announce more details in Philly today. The hub, based in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, includes multiple companies that will “produce, process, and use hydrogen as an alternative to climate-polluting fossil fuels.” [Allegheny Front]
- ➡️ Hydrogen production still uses fossil fuels, though. So exactly how clean is it? And what does this mean for Pittsburgh? [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
Columbus Statue Court Battle Continues
In 2020, the Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA) sued to keep Christopher Columbus’ statue in Schenley Park after the Pittsburgh Art Commission unanimously voted to remove it. An Allegheny County judge threw out the complaint in 2022, and the ISDA appealed that decision this week, sending the battle to Commonwealth Court. [90.5 WESA]
- ⚖️ This comes as Pittsburgh City Council passed a bill this week to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day beginning next year. [TribLIVE]
- ➡️ What are supporters and opponents of the statue arguing? Hear more on today’s Friday news roundup. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
Public Art Meets Career-Building in Hazelwood
Have you seen repurposed, rusty metal art throughout the city? It’s the work of the Industrial Arts Workshop in Hazelwood, a nonprofit offering youth and adults welding classes. Its latest project, a 50-foot-long, 12-foot-high metal and paint mural titled “Braids of Hope,” will be unveiled today at the Elevationz commercial building across from the Carnegie Library.
