What's CITY Talking About?
Duquesne Light Might Strike
Employees in the IBEW Local 29 union authorized a strike on Tuesday, which may lead to a walkout on Saturday if an agreement can’t be reached for their contract expiring Sept. 30. Duquesne Light serves more than 600,000 customers in southwestern Pennsylvania. [TribLIVE]
County Council Sues Over Detention Contract
Allegheny County Council voted to file a lawsuit against County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and the Court of Common Pleas over hiring the private company Adelphoi to take over the shuttered Shuman Detention Center. The juvenile detention center has been closed for two years but plans to reopen after renovations this fall. Council was not involved in that decision, and some members believe that Fitzgerald and the courts “overstepped their power by bypassing the legislature.” [90.5 WESA]
Pennsylvania To Better Monitor Forever Chemicals
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will increase its tracking of PFAS, a toxic class of “forever chemicals” linked to some cancers, thyroid disease, developmental delays in children, and other serious health conditions. A recent U.S. Geological Survey found that PFAS are in 76% of Pennsylvania’s 161 rivers and streams. [WHYY]
- 📖 Local environmental journalist Kristina Marusic addresses forever chemicals in her new book, “A New War On Cancer: The Unlikely Heroes Revolutionizing Prevention.”
