September 22, 2023

Happy Friday, neighbor! Yinz have no excuse for a boring weekend because I have an extra packed calendar below ⬇️ Plus, catch up on what’s happening in Harrisburg after this week’s special election on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast.

What's CITY Talking About?

Premiere for the New Greer Cabaret

The Pittsburgh Cultural District’s Greer Cabaret Theater got a refresh, and it’s on display at tonight’s grand opening performance of Pittsburgh CLO’s “tick, tick … BOOM!.” The stylish new theater and bar is located in the Theater Square complex, which means that guests can go from the Cultural District garage directly into the theater. Mark your calendar for Trust Cabaret’s own series on select Monday nights. [Pittsburgh Magazine]

Springdale Implosion on Hold

An implosion of the boiler house at the Cheswick Generating Station was scheduled for 8 a.m. today, but it has been delayed after 16 residents filed a lawsuit to stop the demolition. All scheduled road closures have been canceled. [TribLIVE]

Hazelwood Green Development Gets Green Light

CMU and Pitt both have approval from the City Planning Commission to revamp the aging Hazelwood mill site into a pioneering biotech and robotics center. Pitt is building a BioForge facility that will house cell- and gene-therapy. Nearby, CMU will build a robotics laboratory by the university’s Mill 19 Manufacturing Futures Institute. [PublicSource]

Pens Preseason Starts Sunday

The Pittsburgh Penguins will take the ice against the Columbus Blue Jackets at 1 and 7 p.m. on Sunday. After not making it to the playoffs last year, the Pens made some big changes — including a fresh front office and the biggest offseason trade. Check out the training camp roster. [TribLIVE]

Pennsylvania’s Primary Could Be Earlier Next Year

In order to avoid conflict with the Jewish holiday of Passover, the Senate approved a bill this week to move up Pennsylvania’s 2024 primary election by five weeks to March 19. The bill still has to pass the House. [Associated Press]

Special Elections, Texting the Governor & Why It’s So Hard to Vote in PA

Pittsburgh affected the whole dang state when we elected a new representative this week; Pennsylvanians will be automatically registered to vote at the DMV; our five most recent former governors would love to open our primary elections; the “revolving door” for lawmakers to become lobbyists is an increasing problem in Harrisburg; and Gov. Josh Shapiro opened a text line for constituents — if you have an iPhone.

We’re covering all of that with Stephen Caruso of SpotlightPA and Kim Lyons, the new executive editor of the Pennsylvania Capitol-Star.

Have a great weekend!
