What's CITY Talking About?

Dems Take the House in Special Election

Democrat Lindsay Powell secured a one-vote House majority for Democrats in Tuesday’s special election. The former mayoral staffer and member of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh won the seat for District 21, an area representing parts of Pittsburgh and Shaler Township. Democrats will again have control of the chamber as representatives finish negotiating the state budget; the House’s next voting day is Sept. 26. [SpotlightPA]

Programs for the Next Gen of Naturalists

With a $100,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will develop a Junior Young Naturalist Program for middle schoolers that will teach them about environmental careers. The cohort will also complete projects to “help create green neighborhoods and mitigate the effects of climate change” while focusing on communities disproportionately affected by air pollution and tree canopy loss. Adaptive Bikes for River Trails

POGOH, Pittsburgh’s bike sharing organization, is launching four types of adaptive bikes for people of all abilities to use along riverfront trails this month: a recumbent bicycle, a tandem bicycle, a front-loading cargo bicycle, and a hand tricycle. See them for yourself at the End of Summer Roll Up on Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Westinghouse Park. POGOH will also add an adult tricycle and a two-person side-by-side tricycle next year. Wholly’s 111th Anniversary Will Make A Splash

The Strip District seafood institution is celebrating its big day this Saturday with a massive version of its popular Wholey Whaler sandwich. How big? 111 pounds on top of a 8-foot by 4-foot Mancini’s bun. It all starts at 11 a.m. with giveaways, raffles, a photo booth, cake, and bites of what they’re dubbing the “Whaler Wonder.” [Pittsburgh Magazine]

Spend the Night at the Silence of the Lambs House

Did you know Pittsburgh is the backdrop for one of the most thrilling movies ever made? The Silence of the Lambs was mostly filmed around Pittsburgh in the early 1990s.  When the house of the film’s skin-conscious serial killer, Buffalo Bill, went up for sale a few years ago, a fan bought it. Filmmaker Chris Rowan recreated parts of the set — including the infamous basement well — and converted the house into a “boutique accommodation and a cinematic destination.” City Cast got a special tour.

Dying to learn more about Buffalo Bill’s? Check out guided tours or book an overnight stay. And if you go this weekend, you can catch Brooke Smith who played “Cathrine Martin” in “Silence of the Lambs.”

Until tomorrow,

Francesca Dabecco
