The $7 billion bid to create clean(er) energy
September 12, 2023
Good morning! This is Natalia Aldana, a newsletter editor at City Cast, filling in for Francesca for the next two days.
In remembrance of the many losses of 22 years ago on Sept. 11, here’s a video tribute from Shanksville remembering the heroic passengers aboard Flight 93.

What's CITY Talking About?
County Plans for Juvenile Detention
Allegheny County wants contractors to renovate a small portion of Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, which closed in September 2021, by the end of the year. Updates are expected to begin Sept. 27, including new single-housing units, a temporary admin space, a 16-foot high-security fence, and more. The county received $15 million for the project this year. [PINJ]

State Funding Ends for Controversial Pregnancy Groups
Gov. Josh Shapiro will be turning off a multimillion-dollar funding stream to Pittsburgh-based Real Alternatives, a nonprofit crisis pregnancy center that encourages women to “choose childbirth over abortion” by the end of the year. Crisis pregnancy centers far outnumber abortion clinics in Pennsylvania, a trend that reflects the rest of the country. An investigation by the nonprofit outlet Rewire found that many of these centers are often funded by dark money. [Pittsburgh City Paper / New York Times / Rewire]

Where Is It?

It’s game time! Tell me where you can find the photo above, then come back tomorrow to see the location in the weekly neighborhood guide 👀
🌟 Shout out to readers Emma B., Gloria G., Tiffany L., Kara B., Jamie P., Andy C., Andrea A., Nick H., Kellie M., and Kyle K. who correctly guessed last week’s challenge:

Pigeon Bagels in Squirrel Hill is absolutely worth the hype, and then some! Bagels include sesame, marble, and everything, plus homemade shmears — it’s all kosher and all delicious. They open shop at 7:30 a.m., and you have to get there relatively early before they sell out. You’ll probably wait in line for a bit — but at least you can spend that time admiring this funky mural!

6 Things You Didn't Know Your Library Card Could Do
When Andrew Carnegie started opening libraries in southwest Pennsylvania in the 1890s, he wanted to bring books and knowledge to everyone — not just those who could afford to pay. Now libraries are taking that spirit beyond the printed word, offering everything from power tools to ukuleles to genealogy databases. On the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, Francesca's exploring the unique collections available for you to check out at local libraries.
Have a great day!
