9 Years, 5 Sales: Is Pgh’s land bank a bust?

September 5, 2023

Good morning, neighbor! You’ve probably seen vacant properties all over the city and wondered why they haven’t been developed. We’re talking about how Pittsburgh’s land bank works — or doesn’t — on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast.

What's CITY Talking About?

Pittsburgh Nurses Call Out Working Conditions

Members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) organized at the City-County Building last week to call attention to dangerously high nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. They’re asking for a minimum $40-an-hour wage that increases with experience to help retain senior staff. SEIU nurses also want hospitals to limit hiring travel or agency nurses, who are often paid two or three times staff nurses’ hourly wage. [90.5 WESA]

Hazelwood Residents Want a Say in ‘Bio Valley’

CMU and Pitt are looking to redevelop an aging Hazelwood mill site into a pioneering biotech and robotics center, but residents want to know how it will serve them. At the center of the conversation is the 178-acre Hazelwood Green, land that was operated by Jones & Laughlin Steel for most of the 20th century. While CMU plans to offer technology workshops to senior citizens and STEM programming to youth, residents are still concerned that developers aren’t investing in the community. [PublicSource]

Free Museum Admission

The Heinz History Center and Fort Pitt Museum are free for kids 17 and under through Nov. 30. Don’t miss the original set and puppets in the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood exhibit at Heinz or “Guyasuta: The Life and Legend of a Seneca Chief” at the Fort Pitt Museum. [Pittsburgh City Paper]

Could Pgh’s Land Bank Finally Work?

Almost a decade after it was created, Pittsburgh’s land bank made its first few sales this summer. Why did the land bank take so long to get off the ground, and does this portend a more productive future? Jon Moss, co-editor of the Pittsburgh Union Progress, shares the renewed hopes and continued challenges for the city’s grandest residential housing experiment.

Have a great week!
