Why some Pittsburgh bus routes are changing
August 29, 2023
Got any house projects to do? PPG Paints unveiled its color of the year, “Limitless.” Honestly, it’s just beige. But it’s a pretty one, if that’s your style. I hope your day is full of color 🌈

What's CITY Talking About?
Corporations Are Buying Up Pittsburgh Homes
A new study by the nonprofit Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group shows Pittsburgh homes purchased by corporations and real estate investors increased from 15% in 2010 to nearly 25% in 2021. Communities that saw the highest number of houses going to corporations or investors were predominantly Black, low-to-moderate income communities like Allentown, Larimer, and Knoxville, as well as outside of the city in McKeesport and Wilkinsburg. Nearly three in five sales were also in Central Oakland, home to a lot of Pitt students. [Pittsburgh Union Progress]

Mobile Care for Pets & Parents
Humane Animal Rescue Pittsburgh and Allegheny Health Network are hitting the road with a new mobile health initiative, the Humane Health Coalition, to reach people in “food deserts or health care deserts.” Vets will attend to animals in the mobile unit — outfitted with anesthesia and surgical units, a wet sink, an exam table, built-in cages, and seating for pet owners — while nurses, social workers, and mental health professionals from AHN help their owners. Traffic Shifts Near Veterans Bridge
Work near the Veterans Bridge began on Monday and will continue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 15. Keep an eye out for lane narrowing and traffic shifts. [TribLIVE]
Art on the Fossil Fuel Frontlines
Carnegie Museum of Art’s new exhibit, “Unsettling Matter, Gaining Ground,” explores what it's like to live "where coal, oil, and gas are mined, drilled for, and transformed into energy and greenhouse gasses." The pieces span from the Pacific Northwest to Appalachia, but many pieces tie directly back to Pittsburgh. See it on display through January. [90.5 WESA]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Tell me where you can find the photo above, then come back tomorrow to see the location in my weekly neighborhood guide 👀
🌟 Shout out to readers Maureen L., Knox C., and Andy C. who correctly guessed last week’s challenge:

Mediterra’s new cafe on Butler Street is a welcome addition to Lawrenceville. My suggestion? Go for breakfast and coffee, and get a tasty pastry to go. I also walked out with a lavender lemonade. It was so refreshing for a stroll through the neighborhood. Here’s what else to see and do.

Today on City Cast

Is Pittsburgh the Midwest? Or Part of Appalachia?
It's a debate we've all had plenty of times. Usually in front of a beer or our computers or even our phones. Everyone thinks they're right. Most people cite sources. Everyone makes fun of those sources. It's a constant back and forth. So we’re making it an official debate. Where is Pittsburgh?!
Until tomorrow,
– Francesca Dabecco
