🍎 Pittsburgh-made snacks for your lunchbox

August 28, 2023

Good morning, neighbors! Students at Pittsburgh Public Schools are back in the classroom today. We’ve got a City Cast Pittsburgh podcast about the state’s teacher shortage, a look back at famous Pittsburghers’ yearbook photos, and a roundup of locally-made snacks to pack for lunch 🍎

What's CITY Talking About?

Fatal Garfield Standoff Exposes ‘Cracks in the System’

  • 75 law enforcement officers from three agencies are on administrative leave after an eviction in Garfield led to an hours-long standoff and the death of William Hardison Jr. Leave is common after a major incident to give a third-party agency time to review what happened.
  • “There’s a lot of cracks in the system that this would have been covered, and we wouldn’t be here,” Mayor Ed Gainey said.
  • Police Chief Larry Scirotto said the city's team used every resource to try to reach a peaceful resolution, and that if they had suspected he was armed, they would have approached the operation differently.
  • Pennsylvania State Police are handling the investigation to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified. [TribLIVE / 90.5 WESA]

💬 Chief Scirotto had his first “community conversation” in the Hill District last week. The next one will be held at the Northside Partnership Project on Sept. 5.

A Very Good Start for the Steelers

The team capped the preseason with a 3-0 record last week, notching a nearly perfect first half against Atlanta with 2nd-year quarterback Kenny Pickett at the helm. It’s got fans thinking we might actually be a real contender this season. And maybe the best part of all: “No real injury things to speak of — thankfully.” The regular season kicks off at home Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. against San Francisco. [TribLIVE]

Today: Ultimate Zombie Contest

ScareHouse is looking for the city’s ultimate zombie today at 7 p.m. Head over to the former H&M location near the food court inside Pittsburgh Mills Mall to compete for the title. Entrants will get a voucher for ScareHouse while supplies last, and the winners will receive VIP-access all season. ScareHouse opens Sept. 8. [Pittsburgh Magazine]

  • 📽️ This year marks the 55th anniversary of George A. Romero’s cult classic, “Night of the Living Dead.”
  • 🎧 Ahh!!! Remember when we talked to Pittsburgh’s iconic scream queen on the City Cast Pittsburgh Podcast?
