What's CITY Talking About?
What Happened at the Standoff in Garfield?
- William Hardison, Jr., 63, died in Garfield on Wednesday evening after a six-hour standoff with police. Seven deputies wearing body armor attempted to evict him from a home near Broad Street and North Mathilda Street at 11 a.m., which led to thousands of shots of gunfire.
- Officers say they attempted to persuade him to come out peacefully, but he responded with more gunfire; there was a lot of ammunition in his home.
- City officers, Allegheny County Police, and agents from state and federal agencies responded to the scene and evacuated residents in nearby homes and businesses.
- City emergency medical services officials pronounced Hardison dead at 5:08 p.m. “We believe the suspect was neutralized during the gunfight,” Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto told CNN. No one else was hurt.
- The house on Broad Street was in Hardison’s family until his father, William Hardison Sr., sold it for $25,000 to a company who buys and sells properties to investors. Hardison was served with eviction paperwork on Aug. 2. [TribLIVE / 90.5 WESA]
75 Years of Neville Roller Drome
Pittsburgh’s last fully-dedicated roller rink is celebrating its 75th anniversary this fall. Neville Roller Drome, located about a 20-minute drive north west of the city on Neville Island, is currently owned by Jim Park, who has been skating there since 1969. Roll on over Wednesday through Sunday or book the rink for a private party. [NEXTpittsburgh]
- Want to skate in the city? Check out PGH SK8’s pop-up rink at Schenley Plaza in Oakland on Sept. 9. Tickets are $10. Skate rentals are free!
A Comeback for Duq City High School?
Duquesne City is the first school district in Pennsylvania to reopen its middle school after it had been closed. Could a high school be next? That’s what the superintendent and community hopes after not having a school for grades 9-12 since 2007. The area has long felt pride in its athletic program, which recently returned for the middle school, but the school also has some cool new curriculum like an e-sports arena where students can learn about video game design. The district also created maker spaces for horticulture, graphic design, and coding. [Pittsburgh Union Progress]

Dick’s, Duquesne City & Early Bird Dinner
A new study found Pennsylvanians eat dinner surprisingly early so we asked yinz what time you eat, big layoffs and a store expansion put a spotlight on Dick’s Sporting Goods this week, and Duquesne City School District could get its high school back — which may bode well for other schools still struggling financially from our unconstitutional funding formula.
Have an awesome weekend!
