🫐 How to make fermented pop in Pittsburgh

August 24, 2023

Hey neighbors, I’m challenging you all with a task today: kill at least one spotted lanternfly! They are EVERYWHERE, and it’s not great for our local trees. Speaking of, I’ve got some updates on how Pennsylvania plans to protect its forests below. Plus, a roundup of posts to help you and your neighbors this week and a City Cast Pittsburgh podcast about fermented pop.

What's CITY Talking About?

What’s the LGBTQIA+ Commission Doing?

It’s been three years since former Mayor Bill Peduto’s office started Pittsburgh’s LGBTQIA+ Commission to study and address challenges in the queer community, and its efforts have been at a standstill. Commission co-chairs, who meet once per month, say that it’s been difficult to communicate with the city’s administration and create a framework from nothing. [PublicSource]

Out-Of-State Nurses Can Work in PA

Starting Sept. 5, nurses under the Nurse Licensure Compact will be able to provide in-person and telehealth care to residents in Pennsylvania, as well as 40 other states and territories. This multistate license agreement is expected to help Pennsylvania with the ongoing nursing shortage. Nurses with just a Pennsylvania license can not yet practice in other states. [90.5 WESA]

Steller's Sea Eagle Gets a Sidekick

Remember Kodiak, the National Aviary’s eagle that escaped a couple years back? Well he shouldn’t be trying to flee anytime soon, because Kody has a new partner — an especially important pairing since sea eagles are vulnerable to extinction because of habitat loss and overfishing. Their population is expected to drop 30%, generation to generation. Spot the pair on your next trip to the North Side. [KDKA]

Foodture Is Back in Biz

The pop culture museum and “Back to the Future”-themed restaurant closed its South Side and Uptown locations after Universal Studios threatened to sue if it didn’t change its name. Now its Uptown location is back open under the name “Foodture.” Get your burgers, wings, and fries, and look out for their new potato chip line, Barnzy’s, in October. [TribLIVE]
