🐾 Pittsburgh’s best locally-owned pet stores
August 21, 2023
Welcome to a new week, neighbors! Today we’re shopping at local pet stores 🐾 and taking a look back at the last episode 📺 of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

What's CITY Talking About?
DA Zappala Affiliates With a Centrist Party
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. lost to Democratic nominee Matt Dugan in last May’s primary, but Zappala got enough write-in votes from Republican voters and formally accepted the GOP nomination in June. Last week, he received a third-party endorsement from the Forward Party — a political group formed by businessman and former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang that hopes to bridge political divides. 30th Street Bridge Reopens
The preservation project on the bridge between Troy Hill and Herrs Island is nearly complete. The $1.84 million project replaced the 30th Street Bridge’s expansion joints, installed a new concrete overlay in the deck, repaired sidewalks and railings, and upgraded lighting. Crews will finish work in the next few weeks. [TribLIVE]
Citywide Parking Study
Pittsburgh’s parking authority is conducting a study of current and potential future parking demand and pricing, and determining whether it should sell off any property for residential or commercial development. Specific locations in discussion for redevelopment are the former garage at the corner of Ninth Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard in Downtown and an inactive parking lot off Liberty Avenue on Pearl Street in Bloomfield. Historic Destinations for Black Travelers
Recent exhibitions at The Frick and the Heinz History Center have explored the role of cars in the Great Migration and how The Negro Motorist Green Book helped Black people in Jim Crow America. But what about outside the city? Historian David Rotenstein shares the stories of safe destinations in Ross Township, Washington County, and beyond. [NEXTpittsburgh]

Inside the Worst Parking Job in Pgh
The car parked outside of Evergreen Cafe on Penn Avenue in Point Breeze has frustrated Pittsburgh drivers for decades. Despite complaints to police and social media outrage, it remained there day after day. Hannah Kinney-Kobre from Pittsburgh City Paper got the man behind the dusty brown Buick to break his silence, and she’s here to tell us what (arguably) the most hated parker in Pittsburgh has to say for himself.
Have a great week!
