🏒 Could Pittsburgh get another pro hockey team?

August 16, 2023

Good morning, neighbors! I hope you’re making the most of what’s left of summer. The stores have Halloween decorations galore, and the City of Pittsburgh already kicked off its search for the 108th evergreen tree to stand outside of the City-County Building this winter. Don’t blink, Pittsburgh!

What's CITY Talking About?

Mayor’s New Peace and Nonviolence Initiative

To build on his Pittsburgh Plan for Peace program, Mayor Ed Gainey’s office is highlighting businesses and events that “promote a culture of peace and resolution,” now through October. If you have an event that you think fits the bill, you can submit it on the city’s website. Check out the Healing Power of Art on Aug. 17, Healthy Expo Community Day on Aug. 19, and PPS Back to School supplies distribution on Aug. 21. [90.5 WESA]

Added Hurdles for Child Care Providers

Start Strong PA reports nearly 90% of Allegheny County facilities are understaffed, and 5,851 children are on waiting lists. Now childcare centers are facing another hurdle: insurance companies have recently dropped or changed liability insurance policies. Daycares are required by state law to hold liability insurance at all times. [PublicSource]

A New Walk-In Mental Health Clinic for Kids

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh launched a pediatric behavioral health clinic where people up to age 18 can receive same-day care and resources for anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns with no appointment. It’s located on the third floor and open from 5 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. [TribLIVE]

Could Pgh Get a Pro Women’s Hockey Team?

Our city is a sports town, but what about for femmes? The North American Hockey League is launching three pro women’s teams, and Pittsburgh is a possible location. Other cities on the list are D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and London, Ontario. Members of the Pittsburgh Puffins, a local recreational team, say they’re excited about the possibility and its potential to increase opportunities for younger players, like for youth teams South Pittsburgh Rebellion and Steel City Selects. The Philadelphia Inquirer shared a new analysis of when Americans eat dinner, and it shows that Pennsylvanians eat the earliest, with an average dinner time of 5:37 p.m.

Could it be because our median age is higher than the national average? Or maybe because of our working and commute times? This sure would explain why Pittsburgh doesn’t have that many late-night eat spots!

I want to know how this study lines up with your habits. Please take this super quick survey so we can dig into the data.

Will an Out Gay Chief Change Policing in Pgh?

When the city announced the appointment of new Police Chief Larry Scirotto, they didn’t mention his gay and biracial identities. He said that’s because he wanted to be introduced on merit rather than factors outside his control, but that he’s proud to serve as Pittsburgh’s first openly LGBTQ+ figurehead and hopes his lived experience will have a lasting effect on local policing. So how did our LGBTQ+ advocacy community feel about it?

Reporter Jordana Rosenfeld of Pittsburgh City Paper worked with host Megan Harris to talk to folks about their expectations, and whether even just acknowledging historical harms is an OK place to start.

ICYMI: Megan talked to Chief Scirotto yesterday. Hear their full conversation on queer representation in the Pittsburgh bureau, how and why he decided to come out when he did, and what he hopes his influence means to people in Pittsburgh.

Until tomorrow,
