What's CITY Talking About?
Medicaid Cuts & High Food Stamps Enrollment
Pennsylvania’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program reached record enrollment this month with more than 1,982,000 registrants — nearly 450,000 more than during the pandemic — in part because the income level to qualify was raised last year. Meanwhile, 137,000 Pennsylvanians lost their health insurance after a pandemic-era rule expired. [90.5 WESA / WHYY]
Redd Up Your Sidewalks
Landowners in Pittsburgh are responsible for their own sidewalk maintenance, but repairs can be expensive. City Council approved a new program to offset costs using city labor rather than private companies, particularly for heavy use areas like those along school routes. Officials haven't shared how much homeowners might still have to pay. [TribLIVE]
Rare Footage of Pgh’s Industrial Past
Pittsburgh Sound + Image is working to preserve newly found footage of “Spang’s First Century,” which “takes us behind the smoke” and paints “portraits of labor” at the Etna-based iron and steel factory. The group plans to show it in the fall, but until then, check out their screenings at Eberle Studios in Homestead, like “Essential Pittsburgh: Henry Roll” on Aug. 25. [NEXTpittsburgh]
Your Guide to Going Dahn River
It’s a quintessential Pittsburgh experience to float down the river. Writer Amanda Waltz gives you her tips on everything from what types of shoes to wear to how to keep your snacks and drinks cool based on her trips on the Susquehanna. [Pittsburgh City Paper]

Gator History, Scanner Guy & Heinz Field Returns
Heinz Field is back in the Burgh (or just barely north of it), there’s a beautifully local backstory behind the @pgh_scanner Twitter account, and Chomper may be out of the Kiski, but the Steel City still has a wild and wonderful history with stray reptiles.
Have a great weekend! 💛
