đ âHeinz Fieldâ makes a comeback
August 9, 2023
Good morning, neighbors! If youâve been reading this newsletter for a while (thank you đ„°), you know that I feature a different neighborhood every week. But on special occasions, we go on mini road trips. Join me for fresh fruit, flowers, and wine tasting south of the city.

What's CITY Talking About?
Proposal To Expand Bakery Square
Walnut Capital proposed a plan to develop further down Penn Avenue in the Village of Eastside shopping plaza at a meeting on Monday. State Rep. La'Tasha D. Mayes talked about the historical displacement of Black people in the neighborhood and whether this development would serve the community. Residents are also worried about traffic flow. More public meetings on the rezoning proposal will follow. [WTAE]
Heinz Field Makes A Comeback
Aliquippa School Districtâs newly renovated football stadium, known as âThe Pit,â will be renamed âHeinz Fieldâ thanks to a $1.3 million charitable donation from Kraft Heinz. âWe know how important the original Heinz Field was to the people of Pittsburgh,â said Peter Hall of Kraft Heinz. âBy working with Aliquippa â a community that has truly inspired us â weâre making our dream of a Heinz Field reboot a reality. [Business Wire]
- đ§ The time we got Pittsburghâs reaction to Heinz Fieldâs name change is still one of my favorite episodes of City Cast Pittsburgh.
Pittsburghâs Medical Debt Relief Plan
The city approved a new plan thatâs estimated to forgive about $115 million in medical debt for about 24,000 city residents. The city will use $1 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to contract RIP Medical Debt to buy dischargeable health care debt from hospitals. You do not need to do anything to apply. If youâre eligible, RIP Medical Debt will reach out to you. [TribLIVE]

Pittsburgh Chatter: Save My Spot!

Last week, I shared this hilarious Reddit post of a stuffed narwhal benign used as a âparking chair,â and asked you: Whatâs the weirdest thing youâve seen used to reserve a parking spot?
City Cast Pittsburgh host Megan Harris responded with a photo of her and I saving a spot for lead producer Mallory Falk in Downtown by being human parking chairs.
Reader Rosanne S. wrote in: âMy favorite âchairâ was a cardboard box with a sign that said âPretend Iâm a Chair!ââ
Podcast listener Jeremy B. recalled two faves: sawhorses and one of those big orange Gatorade drink tubs.
And like I told you last week, Pittsburgh isnât the only city that does this. Jacoby Cochran, host of our sister podcast City Cast Chicago, shared this photo of a container and room fan being used in the snow.

Trenae Nuri, host of City Cast Philly, says that she often sees construction cones and blue recycling bins being used.
From greeting cards to mugs, I just love how Pittsburgh celebrates its parking chair culture.
