Another Farewell for Pgh Journalism
Host Kevin Gavin announced his own goodbye Friday during 90.5 WESA’s The Confluence. A mainstay of local storytelling, he founded the station’s first newsroom nearly 50 years ago and is widely beloved for his long-form interviews and personal philanthropy. His departure, along with show producers Marylee Williams and Laura Tsutsui, were confirmed by management as part of broader buyouts and layoffs, which include severance agreements negotiated through union bargaining. The station’s parent company, Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting, earmarked $2.8 million for salaries and payroll in 2022; of that, nearly $800,000 was allotted to the CEO and his next three highest-earning managers. Pitt Raises Main Campus Tuition
Base tuition for in-state undergrads at the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus will increase by 2% this fall — Hempfield, Johnstown, Bradford, and Titusville won’t be affected. How to Help Pgh Teachers This Back-to-School Season
Pittsburgh-area teachers often spend their own money on classroom supplies, but twice a year, they can stop by The Education Partnership’s Teacher Resource Center and fill up shopping carts with everything they need — from notebooks and glue sticks to Clorox wipes and air purifiers — all at no personal cost. City Cast visited the center to hear how the nonprofit supports educators in need — plus how you can pitch in!
Have a great week!
