🍾 Why Pittsburgh is a pioneer in non-alcoholic drinks
July 27, 2023
Good morning, neighbor! It’s a scorcher out there today and tomorrow. Stay cool and hydrated — we’re talking about some refreshing beverages you can get at Pittsburgh’s non-alcoholic bottle shop on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast.

What's CITY Talking About?
UPMC Researchers Develop Bacterial Infection Test
Children with acute sinusitis symptoms for at least 11 days are often prescribed an antibiotic for infection, but UPMC pediatrician Dr. Nader Shaikh wanted a more exact way of identifying a sinus infection — so his team developed a nasal test with precise results, like strep throat or COVID-19 tests. This testing could potentially stop the overuse of antibiotics, which can mutate bacteria faster or decrease the effectiveness of medication. [90.5 WESA]
Bedford Dwellings Will Get a Replacement
City Planning approved a three-structure, 123-unit mixed-income development in the Hill District to take the place of Bedford Dwellings, the city’s oldest public housing community. All Bedford Dwellings units will be demolished. The project is set to begin in September with the hopes of being complete by 2025. More development: CMU’s Robotics Innovation Center in Hazelwood also got approval. [PublicSource]
Cheer on Pittsburgh in the Women’s World Cup
The Steel City will be represented at the FIFA World Cup by University of Pittsburgh soccer coach Randy Waldrum and 19-year-old midfielder Deborah Ajibola Abiodun — both on the Nigerian senior national team, the Super Falcons. Watch them live at 7 a.m. our time or Monday, July 31. [Pittsburgh Magazine]
Pittsburgh’s Pottery Wheel… on Wheels
The Union Project, a ceramic studio inside of a historic church in Highland Park, is taking pottery on the road with its new Wheel Mobile. Find them popping up around town — like Aspinwall’s Allegheny RiverTrail Park in August — with a potter’s wheel, Raku kiln, propane tank, and plenty of clay to play with. Plus, you can contact the Union Project to bring the Wheel Mobile to a community center, school, or event near you. [NEXTpittsburgh]

Why Pgh’s a Pioneer in Non-Alcoholic Drinks
Pittsburgh may historically be a drinking town (hello, Whiskey Rebellion!), but we’re also on the map as a sober-curious destination. The Open Road in Allentown is the oldest (still open) non-alcoholic specialty retailer in the nation, lined with zero-proof spirits, botanical seltzers, and even dry versions of your favorite classics. We visited the shop to talk to owner Mel Babitz about how this booze-free business is growing, the toughest alcoholic drinks to recreate, and how to pick your perfect NA adult beverage.
See yinz tomorrow,
