What's CITY Talking About?

Where is Shell Money Going?

Another Death at ACJ

A 59-year-old man died in the Allegheny County Jail’s mental health unit on Sunday. He was supposed to go to Torrance State Hospital in April but was placed on a waitlist because of a bed shortage. This is the jail’s third death this year; since April 2020, 19 men have died following their incarceration. [PINJ]

The ADA — a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in jobs, schools, transportation, and public and private spaces — passed 33 years ago, and we still have work to do in Pittsburgh.

The ADA at 30 project, which I had the privilege of working on with Unabridged Press and PublicSource, took a hard look at how accessibility in Pittsburgh compares to other regions.

There are a lot of unseen hurdles for people with disabilities, but many more — like unsafe sidewalks — are super obvious and each of us can make a difference. You can report safety concerns in the city by dialing 311 or via the MyBurgh app.

But let’s keep talking about this: What are some of the least-accessible places in Pittsburgh?

🎧 I spoke to Alisa Grishman, founder of the advocacy group Access Mob Pittsburgh, on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast about what it’s like navigating the city as a wheelchair user.
