What's CITY Talking About?

‘Robotics Row’ Is Growing

Six start-ups are joining the Robotics Factory’s “Accelerate” program in the Lawrenceville Tech Forge building. The businesses will focus on visual intelligence for underwater machines; regenerative medicine; robotic hands / humanoid robots; light tech for growing crops; autonomous vehicle tech to improve the road for pedestrians and cyclists; and artificial intelligence for retail and food industries. Pittsburgh: There’s an App for That

The City of Pittsburgh and PGHLAB recently launched the new My Pittsburgh App to connect residents of each city neighborhood with information on projects and resources. It still seems like a work in progress, but try it for yourself. [PublicSource / Technical.ly]

Is It Actually Affordable To Live Here?

Pittsburgh is often touted as the “most livable city,” but folks here still struggle with the cost of living. Neighborhoods like Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, East Liberty, and the Strip District are off the table for most working class Pittsburghers. News came out that Pittsburgh is getting a Shake Shack at the Terminal in the Strip District, and yinz had FEELINGS about it.

Dez R.: “As long as they have vegetarian burgers and kids meals! Affordable prices. I’m okay with its move (to) Pittsburgh.”.

Adam L.: “Local vegetarian reporting in … Don't we have enough (burger joints) already? The past year and a half saw the closing of B52 (I'm still upset), Onion Maiden, Viridis, and Reed & Co. I just wish there were more restaurants offering options beyond burgers and fries or some form of cheesy comfort food. We deserve better, Pittsburgh.”

Alexa F.: “First of all, I LOVE!!! Shake Shack. Their mushroom burger is absolutely incredible. Anytime I travel to a new airport or a larger city, I will always go out of my way to stop and get a shroom burger, cheese fries, and a black and white shake.

That being said, GET OUT OF HERE SHAKE SHACK! … The Strip has always been, in my mind, the place that feels most “Pittsburgh,” and a great spot to take out of towners. … No where else is there an Asian grocery next to a fish market, across from an Italian grocery, down the street from a Polish deli, with stops in the middle for coffee and street noodles and weird Steelers memorabilia.”

Spin’s Scooter Pilot is Over. Now What?

For two years, Spin scooters have been everywhere here in Pittsburgh. Helping people get from A to B, but also getting in the way. The pilot program that brought them here has ended, and their future is caught up in a complicated budget brawl. And it turns out, neither the company nor the city were keeping very good records about how people used or got abused by their presence here. We’re with Ann Belser, editor and owner of Print, to talk about the dozens of injuries folks reported, the bad data collected by the city, and what she hopes to see if they stick around.
