🌬️ How to monitor Pittsburgh’s air quality
July 18, 2023
Good morning, neighbor! We’re dealing with another wave of smoke from the Canadian wildfires, so I’m sharing how to check Pittsburgh’s air quality. And on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, the team is giving you their best local gift picks this month.

What's CITY Talking About?
The White House is in Tahn
First Lady Jill Biden and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are stopping in Pittsburgh today. We’re one of five cities receiving federal support for apprenticeships and job training in robotics, and the pair are low-key campaigning for the President’s re-election. [WTAE / White House]
Wilkinsburg Can’t Merge With Pgh — Yet
Borough residents tried using an old 1903 rule to initiate Wilkinsburg’s annexation into the City of Pittsburgh, but the Commonwealth Court says it must be done through a majority referendum vote from both Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh residents. [90.5 WESA]
How Is Pgh Affected By the Hollywood Strike?
The Screen Actors Guild in Los Angeles is striking at the same time as the Writers Guild for the first time since 1960 for what the union calls “income erosion, AI exploitation, and abusive self-tape demands.” About 5,000 locals are employed full time in the entertainment industry, and the strike will likely delay Pittsburgh-filmed series like “A league of Their Own,” “American Rust” and “Mayor of Kingstown.” [Pittsburgh Magazine]

UPMC Children’s To Expand Its Heart Institute
The Lawrenceville hospital got approval from the city to add a 50,000-square-foot addition on top of an existing parking lot for inpatient and outpatient spaces, conference areas, and reception rooms. The Heart Institute cares for children, as well as adults with child-born congenital heart problems. [TribLIVE]
