🧀 Our fave mac & cheese spots in Pgh

July 7, 2023

Good morning! This is Natalia Aldana, a newsletter editor at City Cast. I’ll be filling in for Francesca for the next few days.

So tell me, are you still hurting from the Beyoncé tour news? Even Mayor Ed Gainey was upset about it, telling reporters they’re hoping they can figure out a new date because “the city deserves that." 🐝

What's CITY Talking About?

The PA Budget is Late, Again

House Democrats passed a $45.5 billion spending plan this week after Gov. Josh Shapiro said he would line-item veto his own $100 million proposal to use public money to fund school vouchers to private schools. Several of the plan’s GOP supporters called it a full-on betrayal; Rep. Kim Ward even tweeted a Simpsons meme about it. The budget now moves to the state Senate, which is controlled by Republicans and not scheduled to meet again until September. [Spotlight PA]

Affordable Housing Needs are Changing

City Council is considering setting aside $2.5 million every year for the next 25 years for the construction and preservation of local homes. In a meeting this week, councilors argued over how the money would be spent, plus the interest required to borrow it. A 2016 report found a citywide deficit of about 15,000 affordable rentals, though our deputy mayor said this week that figure has gone down because so many people have moved away. The bond measure is expected to pass after next week’s final vote. [90.5 WESA]

The Youth May Be Leaving PA

If you’re between 18 and 29, a new survey says you’ve likely considered leaving the state. Don’t worry, we’re not judging the 60 percent of you who are looking for greener, err different, pastures. What’s driving the desire to leave? [KDKA]
