🥯 Pittsburgh makes national 'best bagels' list

June 30, 2023

Happy Friday! I’ve got your weekend lineup below. Stay cautious though: Pittsburgh is still looking like its old steel days out there. Here are some ways to protect yourself from the wildfire smoke.

What's CITY Talking About?

Later Start Times for PPS Students

Pittsburgh Public Schools district board voted to delay start times to 7:40 a.m. for middle and high school students to fall closer in line with guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics; they recommend an 8:30 a.m. start time to protect students’ mental and physical well-being. [90.5 WESA]

  • Related: PPS has increased its staffing with the help of federal pandemic relief funds, but its student enrollment continues to decline. Those funds are running out, and experts believe that “the district may need to rethink its expanded labor force.” [PublicSource]

County Exec Sues To Stop Minimum Wage Increase

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald vetoed a council bill to increase the minimum wage for county employees to $18 per hour, but then council overrode his veto with a 10-5 vote. Fitzgerald responded by filing a lawsuit against the legislative branch, because he says the ordinance violates the Home Rule Charter. Fitzgerald argues the charter gives him authority over personnel issues and collective bargaining, but council’s independent solicitor says the legislative branch acted appropriately. [PublicSource]

New Mac Miller Music

The rapper and Pittsburgh native passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2018. To celebrate his album’s 10th anniversary, Rostrum Records released a new edition of “Watching Movies With the Sound Off” with special bonus tracks. Local fans can commemorate him at the 5th annual Celebration of Mac on Sept. 2 at Blue Slide Park and Spirit Hall. [TribLIVE]
