🛴 Time is almost up for Spin scooters

June 29, 2023

It’s that time again! Furries are back in the ‘Burgh. Read this newsletter from head to tail for more news and events 😉 P.S. Stay inside if you can help it. The air quality is still unhealthy from the Canadian wildfire smoke.

What's CITY Talking About?

New Proposed Bus Routes

Pittsburgh Regional Transit is releasing its final recommendations for bus routes in Downtown. The second of two virtual meetings is at noon today. The route review was prompted by the upcoming installation of the Bus Rapid Transit system, which will operate exclusive lanes between Oakland and the Golden Triangle. No routes will be completely removed, but some paths and turns will get trimmed. [Pittsburgh Union Progress]

More Spin Scooter Injuries Than We Thought

When riders sign up to use Spin scooters, they agree to report accidents and injuries, but that reporting system isn’t always accurate. A Right-to-Know request filed with the City of Pittsburgh revealed a list of serious and life-threatening injuries. Spin’s two-year pilot is wrapping up tomorrow, and the program will have to pause unless state legislators permanently add scooters to Pennsylvania’s vehicle code by July 9. Jewish Community Differs On Death Penalty

Neurologists testified that the man who murdered 11 Jewish congregants — and has been found guilty of all 63 federal counts — is ineligible for capital punishment (the death penalty), because his brain scans show signs of schizophrenia, but a scan alone isn’t enough to make a diagnosis. Some congregants joined activists outside the federal courthouse to protest the death penalty. Meanwhile, seven of the nine families who lost loved ones in the shooting have publicly supported execution. [Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle / TribLIVE]

The Klondike Bar’s Local Roots

Pittsburgh is the undisputed ketchup capitol, but it turns out our city can (at least partly) lay claim to one of America’s most recognizable frozen desserts. Brian Butko is back to talk about the origin story of the Klondike bar, what happened to the family who invented them, and how the original 1920s classic compares to today’s iconic, foil-wrapped treat.

Be well!
