What would Pittsburgh do for a Klondike bar?

June 27, 2023

Hey, neighbor! Today we’re talking about the history of everyone’s favorite foil-wrapped treat, where you can find a mobile Giant Eagle, things to do this week (like an empanada beer night!), and on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, why you should be nice to your non-sentient friends.

What's CITY Talking About?

PA Republicans Endorse Trump

Despite the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump, more than half of Pennsylvania's House Republican delegation are endorsing him for his 2024 presidential bid, which he officially announced Friday. Trump faces 37 felony counts for the mishandling of classified documents, obstructing justice, and making false statements. [PBS / Axios]

Should the Synagogue Shooter Get the Death Penalty?

The penalty phase of the synagogue shooting trial started on Monday. First comes eligibility, then sentencing. It’s expected to last up to five weeks. The defense didn’t present evidence in the guilt phase, but in this phase, they will attest that “their client is mentally ill and how he became exposed to that hate.” [TribLIVE]

Giant Eagle On Wheels

The cost of groceries has increased 11 percent between 2021 and 2022, making it even more challenging for Pittsburgh’s food insecure residents — especially those without easy access to food. Giant Eagle is trying to help with its 44-foot trailer that stops weekly in eight Allegheny County communities, usually carrying about 650 grocery items. Check out the schedule. [90.5 WESA]

Starbucks Allegedly Bans Pride Decorations

Local members of Starbucks Workers United joined stores across the country and organized a strike for unfair labor practices and the company's change in its store policies around decorations. More than 300 Starbucks stores nationwide won union elections over the last year, including 12 in Pittsburgh, but little progress has been made in bargaining a first union contract. You can't hurt a smart speaker's feelings, but many social science researchers think there's still value in being kind to them by saying "please" and "thanks" during your queries. (Megan Harris / City Cast Pittsburgh)

What Should Worry Pgh About ChatGPT

Pittsburgh is a cradle for technology, innovation, and discovery — but that doesn’t mean we love everything AI spits out. From writing poems about Pittsburgh to paranoid comparisons to nuclear weapons, what should we be paying attention to? And what have we learned? Dr. Maarten Sap, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Language Technology Institute, explains what it means to call something intelligent, why we should be nice to our smart speakers, and if the robot wars aren’t quite on the table yet, what should scare us instead.
