⚖️ What’s next for medical cannabis in PA?
June 26, 2023
Good morning, neighbor! In today’s edition, we’re sharing the best places to cool off 🌊 this summer, a flashback to the city’s first queer publication 🌈, and on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, everything you need to know before buying a house 🏡 in the ‘Burgh.

What's CITY Talking About?
A Year After The End of Roe
It’s been a year since a Supreme Court decision knocked down the nearly 50-year-old federal right to abortion. Since then, 14 states have completely banned elective abortions, and six more have banned abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy or less. Pittsburgh has been a refuge for out-of-state patients, but even though clinics are legal here, there are very few. Allegheny Reproductive and Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania are the only providers on this side of the state. [PublicSource]
Expansion Of A Student-Led, Anti-Violence Program
A program piloted at Perry High School that brings community leaders into schools to mediate conflicts and hires students as “safety ambassadors” will expand to employ 80 students between Allderdice, Westinghouse, Perry, and Carrick high schools. The city and Operation Better Block got a $2.5 million grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency this year. [90.5 WESA]
What’s Next For Medical Cannabis In PA?
Pennsylvania is considering a trio of bills to expand its program. One would make it available for any doctor to prescribe for any condition, another would drop annual medical card renewals and allow edibles, and the third would let growers sell directly to patients. They passed the Senate committee with bipartisan support, and now need approval from the full Senate, which is controlled by Republicans. If that’s successful, the package would head to the Democratic-led House. Gov. Josh Shapiro says he’s in favor. [Associated Press]
