What’s in Pennsylvania’s budget this year?

June 20, 2023

Good morning, neighbor! Welcome to a new (short) week. You’ve probably heard a lot about Pennsylvania’s state budget, but what’s actually in it? We’re breaking it down on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast.

What's CITY Talking About?

Synagogue Shooting Trial Verdict

The person we knew shot and killed 11 Jewish worshippers in Squirrel Hill that awful morning in 2018 was officially found guilty Friday of all 63 federal charges, including hate crimes punishable by death. The jury deliberated for five hours over two days. Next, the jury will decide what penalty the shooter should receive – life in prison or a death sentence, which Gov. Josh Shapiro said he won’t pursue. The court reconvenes June 26. [NBC News / PA Governor’s Office]

Challenges for a Squirrel Hill Development

UpstreamPgh is challenging a 162-unit apartment development at the old Irish Center on Forward Avenue because runoff from the construction of parking lots and roofs could jeopardize the restoration of the nearby stream. The organization is a steward of rehabbing Nine Mile Run, and this particular site was restored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. [NEXTpittsburgh]

Wearable Tech for Recovery

The Pittsburgh-native CEO of Behavior AI built a device, Recovery by Behaivior, that provides real-time support through an AI-powered app and wearable device. The app and device can act as a remote monitor for care providers, a mental health and addiction self-management tool, and an alert (to appropriate parties) if the user needs urgent assistance. Who was out in Swiftburgh this weekend? We set a crowd record for Acrisure Stadium with well over 73 thousand people. And that was just counting those who paid for tickets — thousands more were Taygating out all over the North Shore, on boats in the rivers, and at Point State Park. The Trib has some really cool crowd shots. The arena’s previous attendance record was about 250 fewer people, and it was set a few years ago by Garth Brooks.
