Where’s the tropical food in Pittsburgh?

June 15, 2023

Hiya, neighbor. Today I’m sharing how to use plants to repel mosquitoes, and on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast 🎧 the team is talking to a local farmer who's using his culinary background to tinker with the tastes of home.

What's CITY Talking About?

County Employee Minimum Wage Won’t Increase — Yet

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald vetoed a bill that would raise the minimum wage for all hourly county employees to $18 an hour in 2024, then $19 in 2025 and $20 in 2026. Fitzgerald claims that the ordinance violates Home Rule Charter, which does not give the legislative body the authority to set pay rates. County Council can still override the veto with a two-thirds majority vote within 30 days. [90.5 WESA]

  • Meanwhile, Pennsylvania lawmakers think this will finally be the year that the state increases its minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour. After years of partisan arguments, a Republican is the lead sponsor of a new Senate bill. [SpotlightPA]

Land Bank Attempts To Cover More Ground

Pittsburgh City Council discussed a new process this week for how the city, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and the Pittsburgh Land Bank work together to put city land back on the tax rolls. The three bodies have to reach a new agreement before the land bank can use $7 million in federal pandemic funding. A new process will hopefully remove some of the red tape that has limited the land bank’s usefulness. [90.5 WESA]
