What's CITY Talking About?

What We Know From the Trial So Far

🎧 Here’s some background on the synagogue shooting trial, plus what's been shared with court-goers so far:

  • FBI agents detailed the nine-day process of observing, photographing, and documenting evidence.
  • Members of our local police SWAT unit talked about their shootout with the defendant.
  • FBI experts reported data found on the accused’s phone, including activity on an alt-right extremist site, hand gestures associated with white supremacist groups, and photos of guns and ammunition.
  • Agents testified on the large quantity of ammunition and firearms found in the defendant’s apartment.
  • And pathologists described the close-range AR-15 wounds that the victims suffered.

The trial continues this week. [90.5 WESA / Pittsburgh Union Progress / Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle]

Don’t Take the Fern Hollow Bridge

Starting today, the bridge, along with Forbes Avenue to South Dallas and Braddock avenues, will be closed for a month to finish construction. It’s expected to be complete by July 7. [TribLIVE]

Penguins Could Buy Hunt Armory

The city approved an agreement that would allow the Penguins to purchase the historic Hunt Armory in Shadyside for $2 million, plus costs. The site is over 100 years old and the Pens offer programming and affordable indoor skating to the surrounding community. [90.5 WESA]

Pittsburgh’s Place in the Great Migration

Cars were essential in the early 20th century — not just to get Black folks from A to B, but as a key component to establishing mobility, freedom, and a place in the middle class. But even with a car, travelers had to be careful where they stopped, relying on resources like the Green Book to tell them where they might be welcomed. Tony Norman, a columnist for NEXTpittsburgh, joins us to talk about two new exhibits at the Frick Car & Carriage Museum and the Heinz History Center, plus his piece honoring Pittsburgh’s place in the Great Migration.

Have a great week!
