🛍️ Don’t miss these 5 local markets this weekend

Happy Friday! There’s so much fun in the ‘Burgh this weekend: five different local markets, goat yoga, a pizza fest, Pride celebrations, and a chance for you to hang out with us, the City Cast Pittsburgh team!

What's CITY Talking About?
Bishop Zubik Cancels LGBTQ+ Solidarity Mass
The local group Catholics for Change in Our Church organized a mass with Duquesne University for Pride month, but Bishop David Zubik called for it to be canceled. The diocese says they received hundreds of messages denouncing the service — even though a similar one was held last year. A theology professor told WESA that by calling to cancel the mass, Zubik has legitimized the threatening messages, “effectively promoting such discrimination.” [90.5 WESA]
- The Human Rights Campaign just recently declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people because of the rise of legislation in statehouses aimed at regulating the lives of queer people. [Reuters]

🌈 Thanks to Sam L. for sharing some of their favorite queer-owned local businesses in my call out on Monday. Stay tuned. We’ll share them in an upcoming podcast!
More Schools Could Get An Anti-Violence Program
City Council introduced a bill to expand the “Safe Passages” program to four Pittsburgh Public Schools in an effort to promote peace. The program, which was piloted at Perry High School, brings community leaders into schools to mediate conflicts and hire students as “safety ambassadors” to further anti-violence initiatives. All Aboard “The Terrible Trolley”
The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington County is bringing back the black and gold with a refurbished “Terrible Trolley.” It was originally built in 1949 and became an iconic symbol of the City of Champions. There isn’t a timeline for opening, but we hope it's rolling before the Steelers preseason kicks off in August. [Pittsburgh Magazine]

LED Lights, Lyme Disease, and PGH in the Limelight
It's the Friday news roundup! A local program for movie and theater professionals is getting a reboot, we’ve found yet another thing the state is worst at (lyme disease, eep!), and there’s a new multi-million proposal to study exactly how to replace our city’s thousands of sodium-vapor streetlights over the next few years.
I hope yinz have had your air filters running, because the wildfire smoke from Canada has been tough out there. Stay safe, neighbor, and have a great weekend!
