👟Why you should walk a mile in Millvale

June 7, 2023

It’s Wednesday, neighbor. You know what that means. I’m taking you on a tour of a Pittsburgh neighborhood (well, borough). And to pack in the fun, we’re sharing the best guided tours in the ‘Burgh on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast as part of our new summer entertainment series ☀️

What's CITY Talking About?

Hamlin Gives Back in a Big Way

McKees Rocks native and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin kicked off his multi-city tour raising awareness for CPR training — the life saving procedure that saved him after he went into cardiac arrest during a game six months ago. He’s expected to make a hometown stop in Pittsburgh soon. [90.5 WESA]

Pittsburgh Could Get LED Streetlights

City officials preliminarily approved a $2.2 million study with The Efficiency Network (under Duquesne Light) to determine what it will take to convert Pittsburgh to LED streetlights, which are more energy efficient than the current high-pressure sodium lights. In the long run, it is expected to save taxpayer dollars, because there will be lower maintenance costs. A final vote is scheduled for today. [TribLIVE]

  • 🎧 Meet Pittsburgh’s dark sky defender, CMU researcher Diane Turnshek, who has been encouraging cities to address light pollution for decades. She told us about a city ordinance that she helped to create, what it’ll take to replace 40,000 streetlights in Pittsburgh, and how much humans have in common with birds, bats, and the springtime flora we love most. Pittsburgh Film & Theater Collaboration

Pittsburgh Public Theater and the film office banded together to form Create PA: Film and Theater Works, a program to attract, train, and retain talent in the local entertainment industry. The partnership is funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation for its first year, and the only other city that has one like it is New York. [TribLIVE]

For a long time, people thought that tornadoes couldn’t form in our mountainous terrain, but that’s not actually true. This week marks 25 years since a tornado touched down in Mt. Washington. In 1998, witnesses saw at least 14 tornadoes hit Western Pennsylvania. No one died, but dozens were injured.

Pittsburghers took to Reddit to share their memories of the day.
