What's CITY Talking About?
Student Killed Outside Oliver Citywide Academy
A student died Wednesday morning outside the North Side high school. It’s the second fatal shooting at the school in the past two years. Both the alleged shooter, who’s in custody, and the victim were students there. [90.5 WESA]
- We feel for our grieving community. Here are some organizations to support: The Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Gun Violence, Voices Against Violence, Neighborhood Resilience Project, and Steel Smiling.
🎧 We had Julius Boatwright of Steel Smiling on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast to talk about how his organization is addressing violence.
Zappala Can Run as a Republican
The tally is in: After losing the Democratic nomination to Matt Dugan, incumbent District Attorney Stephen Zappala got enough write-in votes last week (9,697) to run as the Republican nominee in November. His campaign didn’t confirm whether he would, but we may be in for a rematch. [Pittsburgh City Paper]
Council Passes Campaign Finance Rules
Just a week after the multi-million-dollar primary election, Allegheny County Council passed a bill that would cap contributions to candidates at just over $3,000. County Executive Rich Fitzgerald previously told PublicSource that he’d likely veto a contribution limit. If he does, Council can override his veto with support from 10 members, and the limits will take effect in the 2023 General Election. [PublicSource]

Today on City Cast

Summer Tastes Like Strawberry Pretzel Salad
Some tastes are just quintessentially Pittsburgh, and today the City Cast team is celebrating a summertime staple: the strawberry pretzel salad. Native Pittsburgher and friend of the pod, Rossilynne Culgan, shared the classic dish with the world for Saveur Magazine and she brought us a cooler full of treats created in homage of its OG flavors, including Millie’s ice cream, Mary Mac Bakehouse’s delicious cookies and Dewey’s new gose-style dessert beer.
Thanks to everyone who shared their favorite Pittsburgh doughnuts with us, and there’s still time to suggest some more! You know we’re working on something tasty. Stay tuned! 🍩
Until tomorrow,
Francesca Dabecco
