What's CITY Talking About?

Land Trusts for Affordable Housing

In an effort to create a stock of permanently affordable housing, the Urban Redevelopment Authority is creating a program to fund community land trusts to rehab or build affordable housing. The homes will remain affordable for people making up to 80% of the area median income for at least 99 years; applications should open in the next few months. [TribLIVE]

Doulas Can Get State Funding

Doulas, who provide emotional, physical, and educational support to pregnant people, have to receive a state certification in order to be reimbursed through Medicaid. To help more professionals enter the system, as well as reduce the maternal mortality rate, the Pennsylvania Doula Commission is offering a scholarship to pay for the $50 application fee for perinatal doula certifications. Downtown Shelter Closing

The Smithfield Street shelter for unhoused people, located in the gymnasium of the Smithfield United Church of Christ, is closing at the end of June. It regularly hosts more than 100 people per night, and the Department of Human Services said they are working to identify new shelter locations and utilize overflow at other facilities. It’s unclear if there is enough housing to fill the impending need; the recently opened Second Avenue shelter regularly hits maximum capacity. [PublicSource]

  • The number of people living outside is expected to increase by 50% over the summer, and experts say we are experiencing a homelessness crisis. Mayor Ed Gainey held a session with social, healthcare, and outreach workers to better understand the issues. Here’s what they said. [PublicSource]
