| What Pittsburgh's Talking About |
| Pittsburgh Restricts ICE on City Property | City Council unanimously voted to bar federal immigration officers from using city property as a staging area and entering "Safe Community Places," like shelters or crisis centers, without a judicial warrant. Last month, council approved a measure that prohibits city employees from cooperating with ICE. It’s still unclear how the rules will be enforced. [Post-Gazette] | | Advocates Demand Pat Catena’s Removal | Allegheny County Council took the first step toward removing Pat Catena as the group’s president after a small crowd consumed the regular meeting Tuesday, demanding his removal. Catena has acknowledged signing off on a PA House campaign mailer claiming his opponent is "supported by an extreme left group that advocates for transgender athletes in our sports." He’s since apologized and called the message “inappropriate,” but says he won’t step down. [Post-Gazette] | | PA Supreme Court Justice Leaves Democratic Party | Justice David Wecht is switching his registration to Independent — a change based on his feelings that antisemitism is rising within the Democratic party. Wecht was reelected to a second 10-year term as a Democrat last fall; he’s the son of the late Allegheny County Coroner Cyril Wecht. [WESA] | | PRT To Roll Out New ‘ReadyFare Card’ | Pittsburgh Regional Transit is moving to a new, web-based card system that will allow users to add money immediately rather than wait for their balance to load onto ConnectCards. Riders who pay for fare through Ready2Ride can still use the app as normal. [PRT / Axios Pittsburgh] |

| 10 Ways To Celebrate Your Birthday in Pittsburgh |
| | Cheers to another year! (Francesca Dabecco / City Cast Pittsburgh) |
| It’s my birthday month! I’m turning 30 this year 🎉 | | There’s no shortage of fun ways to celebrate in the Burgh (so much so that I haven’t decided what to do yet!). Here are some ideas for your next birthday bash or special occasion: | | 1. Take in the Magic of Our Three Rivers | If your birthday is during the warmer months, you’re in luck! There are lots of ways to have a peaceful (and adventurous!) day enjoying Pittsburgh’s rivers. Check out kayak excursions with Venture Outdoors; rent a pontoon boat for the day; eat alfresco at restaurants with the best water views; or hang out on Riverlife’s floating barge on the North Shore (returning for the season on my birthday, May 22!) | | 2. Jam Out at Pittsburgh Music Venues | Okay, so your favorite band isn’t in town on your birthday … that doesn’t mean you can’t get down with some good music. Pittsburgh has a ton of awesome small venues that support local acts, like Spirit, Roxian Theater, Mr. Smalls, Club Cafe, and Thunderbird Music Hall. Check their calendars — you might have the best night and find something new for your playlist. | | What’s even better? When live music can come with an incredible dinner. Nearly every night of the week, you can enjoy global flavors and sounds at Con Alma in Downtown. Their seasonal menu is perfect for sharing and has a bunch of options for vegetarians. | | 3. Buy Yourself Something Nice (& Local!) | Get something you can treasure for years to come. I love sporting accessories made by Pittsburghers, like jewelry by Jenna Vanden Brink; her dainty ceramic designs are so chic and charming. Or sustainable clothing by Otto Finn; their gender-neutral jackets are made from recycled quilts, and they’re reversible! I’ve also had my eyes on unique leather goods by Clark Morelia, like wallets, crossbody bags, and belts. (Hint hint to my loved ones!) | | |
